And, just to make things worse, the arrival of macOS Catalina (10.15) a few years ago – which moved the macOS to 64-bit software and no longer supported older 32-bit software – killed off a lot of popular Mac games too. Apple has never been very interested in games on the Mac, and this has meant that Macs have never enjoyed the same range of A-List games titles as owners of Windows PCs or games consoles like the Sony Playstation or Microsoft’s XBox. Super active with feedback and very open in his communication about the status of the app’s development and requested features. The Mac games scene is – not to put too fine a point on it – a bit of a mess these days. Today the developer released an update adding a bunch of new features that require a very reasonable (seems underpriced to be honest) monthly subscription, and like a true bro he has the option to unlock it for life with a onetime purchase! I hate monthly and even yearly subscriptions so I especially appreciated this option.Īll that by itself should convince you that this app is worth it, but the thing that really seals the deal is the developer. I bought the Pro upgrade months ago to gain access to additional features and it was one of the few in-app purchases I have never regretted or felt like wasn’t worth the cost. I especially love that I can pick the theme I want, change the icon, and remove ads! The thing I hated most about the official app was the ads that were disguised as legitimate posts and with Apollo that’s all gone! It is fast and smooth and packed with features. It is orders of magnitude better than the “official” reddit app and is superior in every way. And if the community has a request, the developer is quick to respond.Īpollo is by far the most-used app on my phone (and now I have the ScreenTime reports to prove it). I love that I have variety even in something small like the app icon just to keep things looking fresh even before opening the app. About every couple of months a new feature, quality of life update, new app theme, or community-made app icon pack comes out. Stellar developer communication and constant app updates is the icing on top. And when I come back to the app, because I can easily swipe to hide previously seen posts, my feed is never cluttered with content that I’ve already interacted with. I can engage with a post and comment thread so much faster and just as quickly scroll through to the next post that catches my eye. Options to use a dedicated search bar from within the hidden posts section as well as from within my saved content for that one particular thing I’d want to share later make saving so much more meaningful.Ĭombine those features with the ability to customize short swipe and long swipe gestures, and I get a much more seamless browsing experience than anything the original app currently has to offer. You can also use the app as a hub to get updates about other things the developer (Christian Selig) is working on.Īgain, thank you so much for all the years of fun, it was the honor of a lifetime building the app for all of you!Īpollo has so many more features and options compared to Reddit’s app. The app now exists in a commemorative/historic state, with a thank you message, the option to unlock a Goodbye Apollo wallpaper pack, and options to export data if you had the app downloaded previously (shake the device), and all previous app icons are now automatically unlocked. With over 100,000 five star ratings, and many accolades, I was incredibly proud of what Apollo accomplished. As a result, Apollo was forced to shut down after the better part of a decade building for an incredible, supportive community. In 2023 Reddit announced significant price changes to their API, going from free to potentially costing tens of millions of dollars per year, with 30 days notice before developers would start incurring charges. Apollo was a powerful and customizable Reddit app for iOSĪpollo was an iOS app for browsing Reddit from 2015 to 2023.
